EERC, RRVRC & US Senator Byron Dorgan Host Third Action Summit
September 13-14 – Grand Forks

The upcoming hydrogen action summit will take place at the University of North Dakota’s (UND) Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC) in Grand Forks.

Slated to speak are Mark Mathias, director of General Motors’ Electrochemical Energy Research Lab; Richard Farmer, acting program manager at the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Fuel Cell Technologies Program; and Daniel Driscoll, technology manager of hydrogen and syngas at DOE’s

National Energy Technology Laboratory.

In addition to these keynote speakers, the summit will feature panel discussions among regional energy leaders about how to take North Dakota to the next level of energy development and production.

Great Plains Energy Expo & Showcase
Energy Independence through Integration of Research and Technology
September 20-21 – Bismarck

National energy leaders and innovators will keynote the upcoming 2010 Great Plains Energy Expo and Showcase in Bismarck. Featured speakers include Richard Gephardt, former Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives; Clarence Cazalot, President and CEO of Marathon Oil Corp., Dr. Arun Majumdar, Director of the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy; and retired U.S. Air Force General Charles Wald.
The 2010 Great Plains Energy Expo and Showcase will feature exhibitors, speakers and workshops by key energy industry leaders. Keynote presentations and exhibitor showcases are open to the public.

R&D Showcase 2010
Advancing North Dakota’s Science & Technology-Based Economy
September 28-29

This year’s R&D Showcase –will take place at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks. R&D Showcase 2010 will put the spotlight on North Dakota’s most exciting research initiatives, scientific advances and commercial applications by university faculty, students and businesses here in the region.  The summit will feature nationally-renowned leaders and innovators who will share important insights into the steps that North Dakota can take to build a 21st century science and technology-based economy.

  • Dr. Kathie Olsen- Vice President for International Affairs, Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities.  Formerly Deputy Director, National Science Foundation; Associate Director for Science, Office of Science and Technology Policy; Chief Scientist, NASA. Olsen is a Neuroscientist with a prolific 24-year federal government science career which included senior leadership positions at NSF, NASA and Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) in the Executive Office of the President.
  • Dr. Phil Singerman- Senior Vice President, B&D Consulting.  Formerly Under Secretary, US Department of Commerce; CEO of Maryland TEDCO & Pennsylvania’s Ben Franklin Program. Singerman is a recognized national innovator in public/private partnerships to promote local economic development. His 30-year career includes positions in the public — local, state, and federal levels — and private sectors.

The showcase will highlight three of the state’s foremost science and technology areas where university research, advanced education and training, and business collaboration is thriving.  Half-day sessions will highlight research and applications of university research here in North Dakota.  Nationally prominent experts will provide insights on emerging opportunities in energy, nanotechnology and life sciences with a focus on vaccines and immunology.

Milestones & Horizons
Energy Independence through Integration of Research and Technology
October 11 – Fargo

The third Milestones and Horizons Summit  – the premier event to highlight our region’s accomplishments and future opportunities in science and technology– is just around the corner. Co-hosted by the Research Corridor and US Senator Byron Dorgan this year’s event again features thought-provoking, nationally-recognized innovators and leaders, including:

  • Dean Kamen – a true 21st century superstar – inventor of the first portable infusion pump capable of delivering drugs (such as insulin), a phone book-sized dialysis machine, the iBOT wheelchair and the Segway. 
  • John Fernandez, Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Director of the Economic Development Administration– one of America’s leaders in building regional innovation ecosystems.
  • Dr. Edward Jung, founder of Intellectual Ventures, a firm dedicated to funding, creating and commercializing inventions.  Dr. Jung is the former chief architect and advisor to executive staff at Microsoft Corporation. Mr. Jung holds more than 100 patents worldwide.

The summit will highlight the region’s leading edge research and development by our universities, companies and public-private sector collaborations. Featured this year will be advances in unmanned aircraft systems, vaccines, coatings and surfaces, energy, and microelectronics and wireless networks.
