Future venture capital events will focus on leveraging outside venture capital with local investors and linking growth companies in the region with venture capital. Senator Dorgan has established a Commercialization Opportunity Review Committee to review proposals by companies and to work with them in getting their proposals ready for consideration by venture capitalists and other investors. North Dakota Shows Rapid R&D Growth
The most recent National Science Foundation reports of R&D by universities and industry show that the growth of R&D in North Dakota has been outpacing most other states. North Dakota ranks number one in the percent change in industrial R&D increasing from $46 million in 1998 to $347 million in 2001, representing an attention-grabbing 653 percent jump for that four year period.
Among the nation’s universities North Dakota ranks number five in the percent change of Federal science and engineering (S&E) obligations for research and development; R&D plant; facilities for instruction in S&E; fellowships, traineeships and training grants; general support for S&E; and, other S&E activities. North Dakota improved from $34.9 million in 1998 to $67.9 million in 2002, showing a 95 percent increase.
Trends worth watching and worth continuing. You can find the reports at www.nsf.gov
