Corridor Creates Buzz in Silicon Valley
“North Dakota’s national reputation as an emerging center of high-tech research, manufacturing, and opportunity is growing,” says Robert Whalen, Director of Infectious Diseases at Maxygen, a leading Silicon Valley biotechnology company. Maxygen is partnering with Fargo’s biotech high-flier Aldevron on a $2.45 million project for the Department of Defense.
Michael Chambers, Aldevron founder and CEO, said the firm will be involved with research in the fight against HIV, and possible bio-terror agents such as Ebola and Botulinum. The firm’s unique and proprietary Genetic Immunization and Antibody (GIA) platform allows testing of possible vaccines at a much faster rate and at much lower cost than traditional methods. The new funding will allow Aldevron to expand its testing ability and develop additional potential vaccines.
“The research corridor Senator Dorgan is working to build in North Dakota has certainly caught our attention in Silicon Valley. As this effort continues to grow, and as more work like this comes on line in North Dakota, you’ll see more high-tech firms establishing a presence here.”

RFID Action Summit Highlights Corridor’s First-Mover Advantage
The August 11th action summit in Fargo on RFID technologies featured national leaders and regional innovators in this dynamic technology field that promises productivity-improving uses in retail, manufacturing, agriculture, military, aerospace, security and safety, and services applications.
A focus of the summit a key question for all participants was how the Corridor could become a global epicenter for RFID research and applications. According to keynote speaker Stav Prodromou, CEO of California-based Alien Technology Corporation, the Corridor already has more RFID players in the public and private sectors than any other place in the USA.
Future action summits are planned to focus on hydrogen energy, nanotechnology, information assurance/security, homeland security and investment capital. The summits are intended to serve a dual function: to increase networking and collaboration here in the state and to serve as a mechanism for marketing to and connecting with partners in business and government from outside the state. If you want to become involved in organizing or sponsoring a future action summit we welcome your participation.
